Remove Backgrounds from Logos, Signatures, Stamps, and Scans

Sep 8, 2026

Logos, signatures, stamps, black text, and scanned marks are not ordinary photographs. A photo segmentation model tries to identify a foreground object; a document mark often needs color or luminance separation instead. Purgebg’s signed-in HD workflow detects high-confidence graphic and document-like inputs and routes them to its Logo & Signature processor, while photographs continue to the managed AI model.

Automatic classification is conservative. High-confidence graphics use the local graphic route and a successful output consumes one account credit. Human portraits, products, pets, cars, complex photos, and uncertain files use Kie/Recraft; those also consume one credit only on success.

Use the best source available

Before removing anything, look for an SVG, PDF, EPS, or original design file. A vector logo already describes transparent shapes and is better than extracting pixels from a white JPEG. For signatures and stamps, scan at adequate resolution without aggressive JPEG compression, shadows, folded paper, or clipped strokes.

If raster is the only source, keep the original. Upscaling cannot restore exact geometry lost to a tiny thumbnail. A transparent PNG is useful for documents and web layouts, but it does not become a vector merely because the white background is gone.

How graphic detection differs from photo removal

The graphic route examines image characteristics associated with documents and flat artwork: limited color variation, strong foreground-to-background contrast, edge distribution, and transparency. When confidence is high, it estimates the background and creates alpha from the mark instead of asking a person-oriented model to find a subject.

This works well for dark signatures on light paper, many monochrome logos, stamps, and scanned text. It is less reliable when paper has strong texture, a stamp is extremely faint, the mark shares colors with the background, or a logo contains a photographic scene. Uncertain images are intentionally sent to the general HD model.

Inspect thin strokes and counters

Check the smallest strokes at 100 percent zoom. Look inside letters such as A, B, O, P, and R; those internal counters must remain transparent where appropriate. Inspect punctuation, registration symbols, brush texture, and the ends of a signature. A preview can look clean while losing detail that becomes obvious in print.

Place the result on white, black, and a bright brand color. This reveals white matte fringes and semi-transparent gray pixels. Do not force every edge to full opacity: ink, antialiasing, and brush texture may need partial alpha to look natural.

Preserve color and legal meaning

Compare brand colors with an approved reference. Background removal should not recolor a logo. For stamps and seals, avoid cleanup that changes dates, names, numbers, borders, or authenticity cues. Purgebg removes backgrounds; it does not certify a signature, verify a seal, or grant permission to reuse a mark.

Only process material you own or are authorized to edit. Do not use the tool to forge signatures, alter official documents, or misrepresent approval. The terms prohibit unlawful and deceptive use, and sensitive documents should be handled according to the organization’s security rules.

Choose PNG or SVG honestly

Export PNG when the input is raster and you need transparent pixels in slides, documents, websites, or video. Keep sufficient resolution for the final size. Use SVG only when you have the original vector or have manually reviewed a trace. Automatic tracing can distort typography, corners, spacing, and fine calligraphy.

For print, ask the printer which color space and file format is required. A transparent RGB PNG may be correct for office use but insufficient for controlled brand production. Keep an approved master in the organization’s asset library.

When manual editing is necessary

Use a manual editor when the scan contains paper shadows, ruled lines, handwriting crossing other content, embossing, faded ink, or multiple foreground colors that must be separated differently. Levels and curves can prepare the image, while a mask lets an operator restore specific strokes.

Automatic output should be treated as a draft when the mark is legally or commercially important. Compare against the source, have the owner approve it, and retain a record of which file became the master.

Capture cleaner signatures and stamps

Place white untextured paper under even indirect light, hold the camera parallel, and avoid a shadow from the phone. Fill enough of the frame to preserve stroke detail but leave all marks inside the crop. For a scanner, disable aggressive document cleanup until you have compared it with the raw scan; automatic enhancement can erase faint ink.

Use dark ink with adequate contrast. A faint pencil signature, dry stamp, or reflective embossed seal may need manual levels before extraction. Save a high-resolution lossless master. Messaging-app thumbnails and screenshots often add compression that becomes a jagged edge after transparency.

Separate cleanup from forgery risk

Removing blank paper around an authorized signature for a legitimate document workflow is different from altering who signed, what was signed, or where the mark appears. Do not reconstruct missing strokes, combine signatures, change dates, or imitate an official seal. Organizations should restrict access to extracted signature files because transparency makes them easier to misuse.

Use approval, access control, audit trails, and document-signing systems where authenticity matters. A background-removal result is a graphic asset, not cryptographic proof of consent. Delete temporary copies according to policy and never publish a personal signature as a casual example.

Logo-specific quality checks

Measure clear space around the logo, compare exact colors, and inspect small trademark symbols. Test the asset at favicon size, navigation size, presentation size, and print size. Thin reversed text that survives on white may disappear on a dark background if the original edge carried a white matte.

Keep horizontal, stacked, monochrome, light-background, and dark-background variants as separate approved assets. Do not create them by recoloring a single raster output without brand approval. If the logo will be used repeatedly, ask the owner for an official vector package instead of treating extraction as the permanent source.

Remove a colored or textured background

A flat white or near-white paper background is the easiest graphic case. Colored paper can often be separated when the mark has strong contrast, but texture, gradients, stains, and compression make a single background estimate unreliable. Preview the result over multiple colors and check whether paper fibers became noise around the mark.

For multicolor logos, do not delete a brand color merely because it resembles the background. Use a manual selection or an original vector when foreground and background overlap in color. The safest automatic route should decline uncertainty rather than confidently destroy part of the artwork.

Prepare files for web and print

For web navigation, export a tightly reviewed transparent PNG at sufficient pixel density and provide an SVG when an approved vector exists. Add descriptive alt text when the logo conveys identity, but use empty alt when it is redundant beside the brand name. Optimize a delivery copy without overwriting the master.

For print, ask for the approved vector, spot colors, or CMYK assets. A screen-captured RGB logo with transparent pixels may look acceptable in a browser and fail brand or production requirements. Background removal is a recovery method, not a replacement for asset management.
